My name is James Doak, and I’m originally from Jersey in the Channel Islands. I’ve been living and working as a professional photographer in Austria for nearly 10 years. Photography has been a passion of mine since childhood, and I feel fortunate to have turned it into a career that allows me to do what I truly love every day.
Yes, very clearly. When I was 7 years old, I saved up all my money to buy a disposable camera. I took my first photos in the garden at home, and that simple experience of freezing a moment in time left a lasting impression on me.
I started very young, and over time my passion grew stronger through hiking and photographing wildlife. Being outdoors and capturing those fleeting natural moments made me realize that this was something I wanted to dedicate my life to.
The greatest satisfaction comes when my clients are truly happy with the images I’ve created for them. Knowing that my photos mean something to them and will be cherished is the ultimate reward.
Anytime, whether it’s just an idea, a concrete project, or even last-minute. The earlier, the better of course, but I’m always open to discussing a client’s needs.
A good photo is one that holds the viewer’s attention. It should make them pause, look deeper, and feel something rather than just flipping past it.
What I love most is that I get to make a living from something I’m passionate about. Every project is different, and every photo is an opportunity to create something meaningful.
I specialise in capturing moments whether at weddings, events, or in everyday life. Once a moment is gone, it’s gone forever, and being able to preserve it through photography is something truly special.
A professional photographer sees and understands light in a way others often don’t. Light shapes everything, mood, texture, and emotion. As the saying goes: “Amateurs worry about equipment, professionals worry about money, masters worry about light.”
I constantly update my skills through online classes, tutorials, and by studying the work of other photographers. For me, photography is a lifelong learning process.
I want to capture emotion, history, and meaningful moments. My goal is always to tell a story that resonates long after the moment has passed.
I use the most up to date professional equipment available, making sure it fits the project’s needs. The tools are important, but it’s how you use them that truly counts.
Technology is important, but not as important as experience and vision. The best camera in the world won’t make up for not understanding light, composition, or storytelling.
I became self employed and worked very hard to deliver the best possible results for every client. Word of mouth and consistently good work helped me grow from there.
Post processing is just as important as the photos taken in camera. I see it as the other 50% of photography it allows me to refine and bring out the full potential of an image.
Shoot as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Review and edit your work, you’ll learn quickly from seeing what went wrong and how to improve. Practice and persistence are key.
Invest in education and time. Gear will come and go, but developing your craft and continually improving your eye is what truly makes you a better photographer.
